1855 – Benjamin Moore was born in Monaghan, Ireland on 2nd June 1855 as one of a large family of ten children.  His father, also named Benjamin Moore, had been a sergeant major in the British Army but retired in Ballybay, Monaghan, Ireland where he became a farmer. He went to school at Cootehill, Cavan.

1872 - When he was 17 years old, Benjamin immigrated to New York, where he settled in Brooklyn, quickly finding work with a paint firm in Brooklyn & became plant superintendent. He initially stayed with his sister Margaret Martin.

1873 – arrives in New York from Glasgow/Londonderry on the SS Assyria on the 13th May – his occupation is given as "Laborer".

1880 – on 17th November, Benjamin Moore marries Emma C Shaffer in Brooklyn, New York. Emma was born in October 1857 in Brooklyn.

1883 – In January, Benjamin Moore and his brother Robert M Moore opened Moore Brothers in a small loft at 55 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. True entrepreneurs, they started with $2,000 and one product, "Moore's® Prepared Calsom Finish," which was sold exclusively through independent retailers. Moore Brothers built their company on Benjamin Moore's belief in "the exercise of intelligent industry in the spirit of integrity," and a dedication to manufacturing excellence and quality. (benjaminmoore.com)

1884 – in December a daughter – Eleanor V is born to Benjamin & Emma

1884 - A fire broke out elsewhere in 55 Atlantic Avenue, which burned to the ground. To show his determination, Benjamin was the last person out. Within three days, he was back in business in a new loft at Water & Adams Street.

1889 - a New York Corporation was formed

1891 - the present New Jersey Corporation was organized
